Description
“Hurricane Survivor” was photographed at Mala Pier on the island of Maui just north of the town of Lahaina. Mala Wharf was once a fully-functioning pier which served as a shipping facility for the island’s pineapple and agriculture. In 1992, however surf came marching into Lahaina as a result of Hurricane Iniki, and the end of the dock was completely destroyed. Iniki slammed into the south shore of Kauai, causing an estimated $1.8 billion in damage and killing six. More than 1,000 people were injured. I photographed this fenced and abandoned pier as the waves came in. I used a shutter speed of 8 seconds which caused the many waves that came in during that time to look flat and transparent. I balanced my tripod on large lava boulders that created a jetty to protect the harbor behind me. If you are visiting Lahaina, a beautiful seaport town, stop by and see Mala Pier.
